ANGLO IRISH BANK KINSALE FASTNET RACE
Posted by Admin

Just under twenty boats registered for the Anglo Irish Bank Kinsale - Fastnet - Kinsale yacht race. The annual KYC offshore race started at the new time of 1000h from a start line just of the bullman rock. It was a spinnaker run for the all in start as the yachts headed south for the Old Head of Kinsale. The fleet had spread out by the tme all had rounded the Old head. The forecast was for light slackening winds and all were anxious to get as far so as possible as quick as possible before the tide turned. (Photos available in Gallery shortly)

There was a split in the fleet with some of the larger vessels such as Nadie and Freya who opted for more breeze offshore, while the majority were positioned about ten miles off the coast. The wind did as promised and clapped out to just a few small pockets. For a while the offshore boats appeared to be making large gains but the lottery of such a snakes and ladders race saw the inshore fleet making more headway.

First to round the Fastnet was Blondie 3 closely followed by White Tiger and Corby 29, Esperianto who played a blinder by hugging the shore and seemed to have speed while all others parked.

Morale on several boats dwindled with the prospects of a turning tide and little wind for the night ahead. Several boats retired and decided it would be just plain rude not to visit Bushes Bar in Balitmore - it been so close, while others heard of a 1720 party in Crookhaven...

The race continued and several yachts were forced to kedge once the tide turned. Under the fall of darkness boats began to loose contact with each other. The wind eventually filled in and the race was back on. The wind stayed constant for the remainder with Blondie 3 first home across the line at Charles Fort. She finished just under twenty four hours after the start. White Tiger was next and Martin Reilly's Espiranto romped home to take the first at that time on the leader board.

However as others appeared on the horizon, it was Sea Hawk who took a well deserved first and Ian Travers aboard Bandit took second after completing the race two handed.
