 SB3 SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Posted by admin

June 9th and 10th saw the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven host the first SB3 Ireland regional championship sponsored by Helly Hansen. This exciting one design class, new to our shores, saw 29 boats from the four corners of Ireland turn up on the start line for this seven race series. Peter Crowley presided as race officer and ran an efficient seven race series, over two days, under blue skies with 6-9 knots of wind.

Kieran Dorgan of the Cobh Sailing Club, with Mel Collins and Revelin Minihan on board scored an impressive 5 firsts from 7 starts to take the overall event trophy. To do so he left 5 olympians in his wake, along with several former helmsmans winners, national champions and sailors of the year.

Tom Fitzpatrick steered Dave Quinn and John Malone’s “Nav.ie” to second place overall, where they on points they tied with local boat, “The Kraken” with Ronan and Killian Collins onboard. Nav.ie won the tie with a better discard to leave the Collins brothers in third overall.

Throughout the fleet there were races within races, and prizes were awarded for winners in the Gold and Silver fleet also.

The competition afloat was matched by banter ashore that carried on into the wee hours in Crosshaven and gave the fleet a taster of the season ahead.  This sailor, can’t wait for the next installment for this class next month.
