The Irish IRC Nationals concluded yesterday (Sunday) after a long weekend of racing. The planned seven races ended up been six. Yesterday saw trying conditions for both fleets as winds failed to settle down in any direction, a total of five starting sequences took place before class one actually got a start. The wind then blew hard, some boats were caught out while crews rushed for quick sail changes.
Changing down from a #1 to #3 as the gusts hit. The wind shifted once more to turn the beat into a reach and the race course was shortened. With no time to run the final race, crews headed for home.
On the results card, Eamon Rohans ‘Blondie 3’ took the title for the second time in class 1 IRC. Her series points to win were 7.5 discarding a third and having a total of fours first place finishes. Close behind was fellow Commodores Cup team mate ‘Tiamat’ from Dun Laoghaire. RCYC’s ‘Jump Juices’ took third with 14.5 points leaving a large gap from the rest of the fleet on points with 21 points to fourth place position, Marinerscove. Overall, crews seemed happy although the weather and wind conditions were quiet trying at times. The race courses never seemed to be laid as planned as the wind shifts upset the equilibrium.
Although rumoured to be heading west, the annual regatta now moves to Howth Yacht Club next year where the defense of titles will begin once more.
Several boats are now staying on to head to Kinsale for the biannual Sovereigns Cup.
