With just under four months to go to the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta in mid-July, the entry list for Ireland’s biggest sailing event is now over 100 – representing a dozen different nations – and all before sailing clubs at home and abroad have even started their respective 2007 seasons.
Already, two visiting TP52s have entered the Super 0 Class through Benny Kelly (‘Panthera’) of the Royal Corinthian YC on the Isle of Wight and Dun Laoghaire émigré Paul Winkelmann (‘Island Fling’) who is based in Hong Kong.
The variety of classes, from the rapidly growing new SB3 sportsboat fleet to the traditional but fiercely competitive Howth 17s and Water Wags, promises an outstanding mix of competition on the water.
According to Regatta Chairman Brian Craig, “It is expected that the 2005 event entry of 400 will be exceeded, not least because the 2007 event incorporates the Half Ton Classic Cup, which is attracting international interest, but also the participation of additional classes - Super 0, SB3, J109 and Etchells.”
A VOLVO 60 will be also attending the Regatta and a competition will be run for a limited number of slots ...so keep watching the web for details of this competition.
Off the water, there is a comprehensive social programme of non-stop entertainment being planned across all 4 waterfront yacht clubs which will include a 'Ladies Day' and to ensure all competitors have the chance of sampling the delights of what all 4 clubs can offer in the way of entertainment, a 'Harbour Hopper' regatta bus will be on hand to whisk competitors around the harbour. Starting off the festivities on shore a firework extravaganza being hosted by the Co Council will take place on Wednesday 11th
