The major event on the GP14 Association of Ireland’s calendar will be held at Newtownards Sailing Club this weekend (29th -31st August) Strangford Lough will play host to 50 crews competing to win the Championships of Ireland.
Sligo pairing Tim Corcoran and Brendan Brogan will be fired up to maintain their 100% record having won all previous GP14 events this season. However they will be pushed hard by competitors from all over Ireland and a few hotshots from the England and Wales including two time Irish National Champion Carl Jeffs and last years runner up Tim Jones.
The three day event will include six races with competitors counting their best five scores. The fleet system will provide added interest through the fleet. Local boat builder Alastair Duffin and ex- Irish Olympic sailor Curly Morris will provide the local challenge to the Gold Fleet. Gerry O’Sullivan and Ben Saunders from Sutton Dinghy Club will be keen to add the Silver Fleet trophy following their second place in the Silver Fleet at the recent World Championships; local challengers will include Nigel Sloan from Newtownards Sailing Club and Ken Louden from Lough Foyle Sailing Club. The Bronze Fleet always brings an air of unpredictability but Stuart McCormick from Mullingar will be in close contention with Peter Collings from Sutton Dinghy Club.
Following a strong Irish performance at the recent World Championship and bumper sized fleets in Ireland the GP14 class is certainly going from strength to strength.
